Easiest way is using autonooter. It keeps all the B&N stock but gives you root access as well as market access. Search YouTube for Huskermania's video on how to root, but make sure your firmware is 1.1.0 and you use autonooter 3.0.

You might want to consider holding off on rooting for a while until B&N pushes out their new update which is supposed to change the OS to Android 2.2. Hopefully a new autonooter will follow and you can root then. Might be a good idea if you want to keep the B&N stock but add Flash and whatever other updates to the stock there will be.
