The 'new' metadata.calibre file posted on mediafire is very broken. There is no metadata at all in that file.

Are things really working? Are you seeing 'on-device' checkmarks? Does the metadata.calibre file contain lines like "author_sort": "something reasonable" as opposed to "author_sort": "Unknown"?
