Does that make sense?

My thoughts exactly. It makes perfect sense. Every time you connect to the internet with your kindle, you go through the Amazon servers (which is where the discussions concerning Amazon knowing what you browse stems from).
When you connect to the Amazon gateway, they verify that your kindle is legit and not blacklisted etc. etc., so they know exactly what kindle is connecting (model and owner). To me, it'll be really easy for Amazon to just push new ads to the AdKindle models whenever they connect online (because when users connect online, the kindle automatically connects and sends information to Amazon).
