Actually in light close enough to sunlight in color the background of a Kindle, especially those with a Pearl screen, but in that sort of light the background does indeed seem to turn more toward a creamy beige. So it's not you seeing things, because I see the same on all of our K2's and have noted the same for Kindles in the stores.
So maybe that the tip suggested above and get a nice light to read by. I personally do not care for book lights because they are usually awkward to attach, adjust so the illuminate the whole screen evenly, and adjust so as not to be beaming all it's lumens into my eyeballs. I would look at maybe a nice reading lamp or replacing the bulb in the lamps where you like to read with a could of those new daylight CFL bulbs. But even just the soft white bulbs will help a ton if you use stronger bulbs.
I'm pretty distracted when the background of my reader is too grey thanks to insufficient light. So, I understand your frustration. But you aren't alone.
