Limiting CPU access?

Whenever I have Calibre convert comics to epubs, the system becomes unusable for anything else-- Calibre threads take over all 4 of my cores and slow everything else to a virtual lockdown. Is there a way to tell Calibre to, maybe, use only 3 cores, or use only x percent of CPU resources so that I can actually do stuff while conversions are happening?
