I think it would be pretty tacky to give an ad-supported Kindle as a gift, unless the recipient specifically asked for the ad-supported version in order to get in on the "deals".

Otherwise it looks like "whee, I saved $25 in cash money while you get to see ads for life!" Sure, it's the thought that counts, but what would that particular thought say about the gift-giver?

Better to give a gift card amount to put towards the cost of a Kindle (ad-supported or not, depending on your budget) and let the recipient decide which version they want, if insistent on giving out Kindles as gifts.
