The 500 will charge via USB. The charger was so bulky that I often used to skip packing it on trips and would charge with the USB cable via my laptop. The caution is that if the battery of the 500 gets very low then the USB cable won't work and you need the wall charger. So if you aren't the type of person to pay attention to that then best to take the wall charger. The charger will work fine with a plug adaptor for the wall outlet just like you would do with your mobile phone or iPod.
