odds are the small 5" reader is a better bet as the slightly smaller screen should have less flex in it and be more resistant to the torquing force that is the usual killer of these screens. Add a nice rigid cover of some sort, maybe even with a book-light built in as being ADHD he might wake up often at night so reading might help him fall back asleep.
