XP installs have always been easy for me.
I suggest that your Anti-virus or other system error got in the way.

Start clean:
delete the Calibre2 folder in Program files.
delete all previous Calibre downloads
Reboot

Now run the chkdsk.exe to fix file system errors.
Reboot
Now download a fresh copy of Calibre from the official site

Disable your A/V
Install Calibre
(post the exact error, if any)

Re-enable your A/V
