I have a Kindle 3 Wifi US (3.1) ... how do I determine the necessary *.bin file?
As a side note: Even after an unsuccessful update no *.bin files remain in the root folder.
And I always get the error U007 during the update process and no errors during the reboot.

Hmm, the only colorful eye shadow I have had, has been when someone have given me a blue eye in fist fight or ...? giving them bad advices
It sound like you have a model B008. If you look in your Settings in Amazon, it is the first four digits of your serial number.
You have jailbroken it and according to some other post I found, NiLuJe said the following in one of them:
"And if they failed with a U007 error on the bottom left corner, then you'll need to reinstall a jailbreak before running your uninstalls. And the jailbreak *has* to be the last thing uninstalled." However, I am not sure - as I thought that error
had to do with signature on the updating file. Not familiar with version 3.1, and the Jailbreak is somewhat modified.
So ? Does your screensaver hack and so on work properly ? You may check in that thread what is said regarding that update error.
So, check that the those things are good. As for the Duokan, you may try the original:

Flip's version could, or perhaps the download could, have some error. ( He just alter the config file a little, but there was some errors appearing in downloads from Duokan, so..)
Your are sure it does not start up at all ? Note, during startup - you will see the kid under the tree, the normal Amazon bootup. After about a third on the initial progress bar, it will switch to Duokan, and you have to catch that and press "Q" for it to start Duokan. After a few seconds, it will revert to the normal Amazon. For Duokan, it will also revert a brief period to Amazon before it finally start up on it's own.
If you have missed pressing the "Q" during bootup, then you may mistakenly think it did not install. Restart again and see what is happening during the bootup process. The error message may have to do with the Jailbreak, not Duokan.
Not sure about the #4 in you list, as the update_unduokan_0b00x.bin is normally not used anymore. You may uninstall directly in the menu-settings under Duokan.
It should work out.
