Borders is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which means they are planning to reorganize and continue as a business. They will be continuing to sell ebooks through their website. Even if Borders went out of business, the company operating their ebook store, Kobo Books, says that they are not dependent on the survival of Borders. You, or your gift recipient will also be able to buy ePub ebooks from several other retailers, like Sony, Diesel, and Books On Board. You won't be able to buy books for it from Amazon (incompatible formats), Barnes & Noble (incompatible DRM) or Apple (incompatible DRM), unless you're willing to violate the DMCA (assuming you're in the US) and strip the DRM.
