You know we are forgetting one rather large SF Saga series and that is the Honor Harrington stories by David Weber. Though now that I think about it, those stories my be more MilSF than pure SF Saga type stories. I know parts of On Basilisk Station bored me to tears as I am not enamored with details for the military stuff. It's as bad as listening to Johnny Miller talk about "grain" on TV during a golf tournament.

Still if you skim or actually enjoy MilSF the stories seem pretty fun and similar to the John Grimes stories with a lot more of the military detail tossed into the picture.
