The Victorian era was an age of Hypocrisy in some ways. Fine upstanding members of the community I'm fairly sure didn't always practice what they preached. And of course there was a good deal of misinformation on some topics as well. Back then there were a lot of women who plied the worlds oldest profession just in order to have the means to feed their families since there were no real social aids back then to help out. Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist and other books based on his own childhood memories. Google Hellfire Club if you want an eye opener of how things really were among the upper crust way back when. There was no age of consent way back in the 19th century either. It was only at the last part of that century or the early 20th that such laws were passed.
