Been there done that! Not with a reader, but with other fragile things when backpacking. Fragile thing + item of clothing put in biscuit tin = good protection when bag is handled violently (as they can be when travelling rough).
So not a bad idea at all!
Maybe not for daily use, but for more "extreme" conditions!

(And I agree with Poppaea, please remember that in Europe, and probably other places outside USA as well, we can only dream of finding a reader for under $200.)
