They were serialized in newspapers/magazines and they were included in the cost; NYT did Chabon new novel (
Gentlemen of the Road - you can still find it for free in their archives since they opened them recently) this way several years back.
By and large I am skeptical of this method (selling a chapter at a time) for various reasons, but hey let's see how it works in practice...
