I got my kids each ereaders a year ago, they were 13 (son) and 16 (daughter). I bought protective covers and explained that they could break from impact or being stressed the wrong way in a backpack. A year later and they are still functioning and my son takes his to school every day.

It's my currently 21 year old son that breaks things, including the ereader I gave him this past Christmas.
