Let's keep something important in mind here. Amazon made their MobiPocket version incompatible with other book vendors and readers by changing ONE BIT in the pre-encrypted DRM info. Yes, one bit—the only purpose of which is to make it incompatible. It's pretty clear they aren't interested in interoperating.
Today, with an Android tablet, I can sit on the beach (right outside my front door), check out a book from the library, and read it right there. No need for a computer, or DRM removal scripts, or kindlegen. It's awesome. I have two Kindles, and I use them all the time, but I don't think I'll be buying another until Amazon starts playing the same game.
