As I understand it, you only have to register with B&N prior to rooting if you want to be able to use the stock B&N reading ap. Once you root it, you can install whatever reading aps you want from the Android Market. I also have an iPad and other gadgets including an Android phone. I had never rooted the phone so part of my purchase decision was to try out a device that I could "play" with. It really is a lovely toy and I think you will be happy with your gift from the US. I'm planning to take it with my on a trip to NZ in May so I hope it will work there
