To me a closet sounds like a small room, rather than a piece of furniture. Thank goodness C. S. Lewis's American Publishers didn't decide to rename his book, "The Lion, the Witch and the Closet" for the US market!

Around here, at least among older people, it might be called a
chifforobe.
