_The Boat of a Million Years_ by Poul Anderson starts out in pre-history and moves forward from then --- the ancient history stuff being much better done than the contemporary / science-fiction end of the novel IMO.
Some of his novels of the Time Patrol deal in pre-history as well and are lots of fun.
