Right now I just use the official amazon case (like I did with my k2 which is still in perfect condition and was carried in exactly the same way) and it's not cutting it. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the M Edge professional? It's quite a sturdy and well constructed case, with a strap to keep the whole thing closed. I have one, and it's almost too big and bulky - so it might be just the thing for your hazardous bag?
Do you happen to be a student and carry textbooks in your bag? If so, have you thought about changing bags to one with an outside pocket where you can slip more delicate items like a phone or kindle? If you're careful to set the bag down with the "delicate" side out, it might preserve the life of your Kindle longer? Just a thought. My eldest is in college and her bag full of textbooks can be a menace.
