They both use the same screen (it is actually the same part from the same manufacturer), but the Kindle gives the appearance of better contrast because they use a darker/bolder/heavier font. You can achieve a similar effect by changing the font on the Sony, but you have to do quite a bit of tinkering on both computer and reader in order to do that. It's not like you can just change a preference and the font will change.
