"and the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series,"

We like this series as well. I got a recommendation (from this forum) to look into "The Spellman Files" - 4 books by Lisa Lutz. A somewhat dysfunctional family of private investigators in San Francisco. The author is a screen-play writer so the books are written like actors would act and do and not a lot of internal dialog. But the characters are interesting.

There is also the "Bubbles" series by Sarah Strohmeyer. A bit lighter and sillier than Stephanie Plum (if you can believe it). But easy to read.

Also know that Sir Terry Pratchett has another series of books staring Tiffany Acking starting with "A Hat Full of Sky". Dont neglect these.
