I'm wondering what the overlap is between people who steal, and people who would value a black and white reader that doesn't do much but display books? I could see thieves stealing it when they steal a whole purse, but it would go in the trash with everything that doesn't convert to ready cash. Or obnoxious jerks from middle school who would steal it because they consider it their job to torment bookish kids. But stealing it, for itself? I think it's unlikely.

As for reading it on a bench on the street and getting mugged - if the benches are that unsafe, would you really want to allow yourself to be distracted by a reader? Perhaps better to keep your eyes on your surroundings.
