You can read library books perfectly fine on the Sony 300 & 600 models. The Protected Page issue comes into play ONLY when you have a library PDF book and a library ePub book on the reader or computer at the same time. If you don't mix the two, you'll be perfectly fine.
Yes it's a bit of a pain but it's not like you can't read any library book. You just have to pay attention to the format of the library book you're borrowing.
