Thanks for the info, but unfortunately neither of those contentions applies. None of the books loaded have DRM (they have all been converted to .mobi with Calibre), and all are being sideloaded over the USB cable from their Windows master folder.

In the end I took them all off, then sideloaded them again and that seemed to work, although it did take overnight to complete.

I still think indexing, which surprises new Kindle users without fail when it wipes out their battery charges and they are convinced they have a faulty battery, should be optional...
