One thing we agreed on was that the BPI could already persue unauthorised downloaders through existing laws. So the only thing that this new law brings to the table is the removal of any need for evidence that would stand up in court. If they gave that up at this stage it would be a complete waste of time and money.

Did you get any of your "suggestions" incorporated, word for word into the DEA? I know I didn't.
