If Amazon had scored the publishing rights, it would get 70-85% (whatever they decide to pay Hocking) and it would determine the price of the books.
I think that last point is very important here.

What's important that you missed out on is If Amazon had the rights, the distribution would have been only to people who read Amazon's eBooks. Those that do not and do not strip DRM would be screwed if they wanted any of these eBooks.
