I hadn't know the bit about Wolfe, but it wasn't a surprise. He was editor of Plant Engineering magazine for many years before retiring to write full time, and was someone who could do something like that.

(I've met him. Nice guy as well as brilliant writer. I treasure my signed copies of the Urth of the New Sun series.)
