You don't have to be tied to B&N if you don't want to be. You can get epubs from anywhere and it can be read on the Nook.

I'm not sure why this would be an issue since it comes with over 1GB of internal memory as well as a SD card slot to increase memory. If you manage to use up the internal space plus all the space on the expandable memory on the Nook, I don't think another e-reader will be any better in that regard.
