HarperCollins OverDrive eBooks
March 24th, 2011 by Scot Colford
On March 7, 2011, HarperCollins adopted a new eBook policy for all new library eBook purchases. Under this new policy, HarperCollins eBooks will expire after 26 checkouts and the library must license another copy of the book before it can be checked out. This new policy does not impact any eBooks purchased before March 7.
The Boston Public Library is concerned about this change in policy and the ramifications on the library’s materials budget. At a time when the library’s budget is shrinking every year we cannot in good faith support a policy that we feel is detrimental to our service. While this policy is in place, we will not be able to lend new eBooks published by HarperCollins. The Boston Public Library is not boycotting HarperCollins. Books published by HarperCollins will continue to be available to library users in print and audio formats. We are eager to work with HarperCollins and the rest of the library community to develop an eBook policy that is acceptable to all involved.
