I'm not sure I'm going to be any help to you, but I downloaded this epub and loaded on my PRS650. It opens with no problems at all so I don't think there is any problem with the file.

Have you tried doing a full device shutdown, then reboot?

Or even the Format Memory option - this one will probably make you unpopular with your mother, though.
