I come late to this thread, and I have read it all, and I am still puzzled... What happens to an ebook when it is "consumed"? Do the bits vanish, or are they all inverted, or zeroed, or what?

Is this a variation of KKR's produce model of book production? I can't find the part where she describes it, but briefly, books spoil when they are left on the shelf too long; they must be constantly replaced by newer books.
