Sounds like your K3 firmware has been updated. To see location numbers with the latest revision, you need to tap the Menu button (which will also display 'page numbers' if that book happens to have a corresponding print edition that Amazon has used to generate them).
Apparently Amazon's UX folks decided that the more minimalist layout was preferable to displaying location and now page numbers all of the time.
