As for the Overdrive system which primarily focusses on DRM ePub and DRM PDFs, it was Overdrive that chose not to support Kindle format instead of Adobe DRM for ePub ... or at least, the interested parties at the time could not come to agreement.

Happily, there is a cheap solution for everyone interested in a great ereader, (arguably) the best selection of commercial ebooks, library books from your local library system and have the option to live outside of the United States: use a Kindle 3 Wifi and buy a Kobo (or similar device) for library access and to save money on ebooks where the same title is cheaper in an ePub store than at Amazon.
What you're saying is rather what I *might* do at some point. I got a great deal on a Kobo and my library has over 1000 ePubs available for checkout, so I'm pretty happy so far. I have come up against one book I really want that is only in eFormat from Amazon and B&N and one other author who is only on Amazon and who I would try just because he eBooks are inexpensive but I'll try to do without and just get the one I am really wanting in paperback from BAM.

Anyway, I'll try to make do without Amazon and there certainly are a number of places I can get books from easily (the library, Gutenberg, Kobobooks, Borders.com, and, I think, BAM. I must test BAM to see) but I could see myself eventually getting a Kindle as well as my Kobo...
