Barnes and Noble's Nook is the ultimate closed system: it is only sold in the US, and B&N only sells its commercial ePubs in the US. Kindle devices and ebooks are sold around the world. Likewise, Kobo devices and ePubs are also sold around the world (including the ebooks B&N chooses not to sell outside its, er, "borders").

As for the Overdrive system which primarily focusses on DRM ePub and DRM PDFs, it was Overdrive that chose not to support Kindle format instead of Adobe DRM for ePub ... or at least, the interested parties at the time could not come to agreement.

Happily, there is a cheap solution for everyone interested in a great ereader, (arguably) the best selection of commercial ebooks, library books from your local library system and have the option to live outside of the United States: use a Kindle 3 Wifi and buy a Kobo (or similar device) for library access and to save money on ebooks where the same title is cheaper in an ePub store than at Amazon.
