The direct "over the cornea" is the method I use, as well. Perhaps you could try wetting your eyes with a few drops of the saline solution that is used to store your lenses before trying to take them out (you can buy it in the tiny eye-drop bottles, but sometimes you get them for free with the large solution bottles as well); it will make your lens more mobile and pliant.
