It's not necessarily because of a shock or fall, twisting or bending forces can also break the substrate (wich is a very thin glass layer). Moreover, a crack can appear some time after the cause, remaining "latent" until the stress cannot be contained anymore: temperature changes or vibrations can reveal such latent cracks.
