The reason some people prefer LRF is because LRF is justified and ePub was not until the 900 came out. People with a 900 or x50 Reader will no longer prefer LRF due to the fact that ePub can be justified with no page number on the right of the screen.
As for Amazon, they bought Mobipocket and they decided to lock it up so it's not feasible for anyone but Amazon to use it.
