Sometimes, especially if the computer's a little older, the front ports aren't true ports but just an unpowered hub connected internally to the back ports. Some devices need a true USB port (wired into the motherboard) or a a minimum a powered hub.
Don't know that this is the case for you, but it's a possibility.
