Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) is considered one of the greatest Spanish novelists. He is best known for his novels depicting the Spanish society of his time, and for the series of historical novel on the Spanish 19th century, "Episodios Nacionales".
"Marianela" is a short novel that tells the story a poor ugly girl (the title character) who loves and is loved by Pablo, a blind boy. But all is going to change when a doctor comes to the village to cure Pablo's blindness, and his father arranges a marriage to his cousin Florentina.
