I don't know that I'd call them slop, on the other hand they aren't literary masterpieces either. I read them all and also enjoyed them a lot. I think for a series of book written for young teen readers they are very well written and accomplish their intent quite well.

If using one or more of the Harry Potter books can get the students to read and participate in class as mrscoach describes then I say, by all means, use them. I think at that age you're dong well to get a book in their hands instead of some sort of electronic game or toy.
