I never did Shakespeare at school, but that's because I'm French... we did plenty of Corneille, Racine and Moliere instead It was always the full "proper" text, though we were occasionally treated to a theatre production.

Edit: and in total disagreement with the previous poster, I think students should be made to read classical plays such as Shakespeare or whatever the equivalent for each country is
