How extraordinary. I can't imagine why the Anglian Water chap would say that.

Hard water is actually good for you*. It's not so good on heating appliances, as the Calcium ions come out as Calcium carbonate and coat the heating elements.

*well, it was good for me. Moving from a soft water area to a hard water area at age 5 fixed up some problems with teeth and nails.
