IS IT? I grabbed a library book to my computer last night. Couldn't open it without adobe digital editions??? So it appears that the group making bank off this situation is ADOBE. They have a massive DRM racket going that everyone seems to dismiss here. What is the deal?
Don't confuse DRM with format. Library books have DRM. Books you buy from Barnes and Noble, or Borders, or Amazon usually have DRM. Adobe is in the DRM business (hence the Library books have Adobe DRM on them.)

Calibre converts formats to whatever you need. It can't convert DRM'd copies, however, without help. But help is available if you want it.

I have a Kindle. I read library books. I buy from Kobo, B&N, Amazon, whomever. And I read all of them on my Kindle. And if my next reader is not a Kindle, I'll convert MY books to whatever format it needs. (Note: that does NOT include library books, which are deleted when I'm done.)

Please don't confuse DRM and format. DRM is the issue, not the format of the books you can buy or borrow.
