The first film adaptation of
Pride and Prejudice is somewhat notorious among Janeites for things like the insertion of a carriage race, and the major change of character given to Lady Catherine. And the costumes are from quite the wrong period.
According to one of the movie's stars, there was quite a practical reason for these non-period appropriate costumes. What was that reason?
