My biggest uses for it have been twofold. It does a good job of organizing your ebooks and helps to sync between your computer and ereader, which I gather is it's primary function anyway. I also use it to convert between formats, both my JetBook and Kobo read ePub files, but sometimes the books I find are in other formats so I use it to convert them over to ePub, I can also modify them with Calibre.

The JetBook sometimes has problems loading ebooks with certain covers or pictures and I can use Calbre to edit those to something the JetBook likes. For instance, most ebook covers are in color and I've noticed that sometimes the JetBook has issues with them so I expand the ebook with Calibre, edit the cover to grayscale with photoshop elements, and then resave the ebook with the new cover and problem solved.

As far as your library goes, most libraries use the Overdrive system which requires you having ADE on your computer and if it works ok for you, then I suggest you keep doing it as that's what it's for. Calibre can do other things to books that you get through there and books that also have DRM but, this is not a subject I'll discuss here, that's for other places.
