This is what Kobo says about the firmware upgrade:

Hello Douglas,
Thank you for contacting Kobo customer care. I understand that you are trying to update your wifi eReader. I apologize for the miscommunication, however the upgrade is only available to a random 5% of our customers, at this time is not yet available publicly. When it becomes available to you, because you have the wifi model, your reader will prompt you to upgrade, if you ignore the prompt you will have to upgrade through the computer at that time. You can still use the desktop the same even though it is at v.1.9, the desktop will sync with lower version of eReaders. Again I greatly apologize for the miscommunication with this matter.
