FontSubst will support FontSmoother soon--apparently it's pretty close to working.
FontHackV 2.x and FontSmoother have some interaction problems to work out. It's in process.
So, yes, you will always need a font chooser--I don't want to have to duplicate all of the code of Fonts4OS5 / FontSubst / FontHackV. However, you will have a choice of font choosers.
FontSmoother merely extends the OS by allowing antialiased fonts. The fonts still need to be loaded.
