Well, B&N are kind of incompetent in running their own store; it's no surprise that they'd be less than efficient in properly killing off the one they took over in order to gut and absorb the bits they wanted from it.
Though mind you, parasites don't actually kill off their hosts, but the good ones also keep the hosts in some semblance of proper health. Better returns that way.
